Quick verdict

Should Foxit be on your shortlist?

Strongest use case
A UK small business of two to one hundred people that works heavily in PDF — editing proposals, contracts, forms and scanned documents — and wants a credible, lower-cost alternative to Adobe Acrobat with the option of a perpetual licence, plus a separate e-signature service for routine agreements.
Main limitation
Foxit is a US-headquartered vendor with US dollar pricing, no Linux desktop editor, no native Chromebook app, no ISO 27001 certification listed, and eSign data residency in the US, EU or Canada rather than the UK. The free Reader cannot edit page content, and AI features are metered with a paid tier for heavier use.
Who should investigate it
UK SMEs in professional services, legal support, finance, education or the public sector that produce or process PDF documents daily, that need editing, OCR, redaction, forms and conversion in one tool, and that are comfortable with US dollar billing and non-UK data hosting for a cloud e-signature service.
When another approach makes more sense
Buyers who need a UK data centre, a UK supplier entity, ISO 27001 certification as a procurement condition, a Linux desktop editor, a free editor rather than a free viewer, or a single per-seat bundle that includes unlimited e-signatures at a small-team price.

Definition

What is Foxit?

Foxit is PDF software with a twenty-year history as an alternative to Adobe Acrobat, and its current lineup is best understood as two products. Foxit PDF Editor is the editing application: it creates, edits, converts, secures, annotates and signs PDF documents on Windows, macOS, the web and — on the higher subscription — iOS and Android. Foxit eSign is a separate cloud service for sending documents for electronic signature, with templates, bulk sending, in-person signing, payment collection and a tamper-evident audit trail. A bundle called PDF Editor+ sits between them, adding mobile apps, AI Smart Redact and 150 e-sign envelopes a year to the standard editor subscription.

The editing feature set is genuinely complete for ordinary business use. Text and images can be edited directly on the page with automatic reflow; pages can be inserted, deleted, reordered, rotated, cropped, merged and split; scanned documents become editable and searchable through OCR; forms can be created with automatic field recognition; documents can be password-protected with AES-256 encryption and permission controls; and files convert to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and image formats with PDF/A and PDF/X compliance for archiving and print. Collaboration runs through comments, markup, stamps and share links, with real-time co-authoring on shared documents.

Foxit eSign is a credible mid-market e-signature service rather than a checkbox feature. It supports typed, drawn and clicked electronic signatures and certificate-based digital signatures on every plan, with authentication levels from email access through SMS codes and knowledge-based authentication to qualified electronic signatures under eIDAS via a ZealiD integration on the Business plan. Every completed agreement carries an audit trail recording signer metadata, RFC 3161 timestamps, IP addresses and event logs, and the service holds SOC 2 Type 2 attestation with support for ESIGN, UETA, GDPR, HIPAA and 21 CFR Part 11 on the Business plan.

What Foxit is not matters for a UK buyer. It is not a free editor: the well-known Foxit PDF Reader is a viewer that annotates and fills forms but cannot edit page content. It is not a UK vendor: the company is headquartered in California, prices are published in US dollars, and eSign data residency is the US, EU (Frankfurt) or Canada. And it is not a single all-in-one subscription: editing and e-signing are separate purchases, with the bundle and the AI features gated behind the higher tier and a metered add-on.

UK Business Stack classifies Foxit as the document layer of a small-business stack: it sits between the office applications where documents are created and the systems where they are stored, signed and archived, and it tries to cover enough of that middle that a separate PDF tool becomes unnecessary.

Stack position

How Foxit fits into a small-business stack

Foxit occupies the space that a word processor's export function, a scanner, a form tool and a signature service usually fill together. Documents arrive from email, scanning and the office suite; Foxit edits, converts, secures and signs them; and the results land in SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox or Box through the integration catalogue.

The integration story is strong for document-centric work. Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and Salesforce connectors are published, alongside a dedicated Foxit for Salesforce product, Zapier for everything else, and developer APIs for PDF services, document generation and embedding. The gap that matters in the UK is not integration breadth but the absence of a native connection to the accounting and CRM packages a small business runs, which means signed documents still travel by email or manual upload.

The e-signature question is where Foxit's positioning gets interesting. Foxit eSign competes with dedicated signing services rather than with the editing tools, and its SOC 2 attestation, eIDAS support and qualified signature capability make it a credible choice for routine UK agreements — provided the buyer accepts US, EU or Canadian data hosting and US dollar pricing.

  5. Line of businessCRM, email, records — manual hand-off today
Documents arrive from your office suite and scanners, Foxit edits, secures and signs them, and the finished files land in storage and line-of-business systems.
Office and cloud storage

Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox and Box connect so documents move between the editor and where the business keeps them without a separate upload step.

CRM and sales

A dedicated Foxit for Salesforce product and Zapier cover the sales stack, but no native connection to HubSpot, Pipedrive or the accounting packages is published, so signed documents reach the CRM by email or manual upload.

Developer and automation

PDF Services, Document Generation and Embedding APIs plus Zapier and an MCP server cover custom workflows, from bulk generation to embedding PDF viewing in your own application.

Scanning and capture

OCR turns scanned paper into editable, searchable PDFs, which is where Foxit earns its keep for businesses digitising records, invoices and archived files.

Core workflow

How Foxit works

The flow below reflects Foxit's documented product behaviour and published setup guidance. UK Business Stack has not run a live Foxit trial for this review, so treat these steps as documented behaviour rather than tested behaviour.

Step 1

Install and sign in

Download the Windows or macOS editor, or open the web editor in a browser, and sign in with a Foxit account; the 14-day trial needs no credit card, and the free Reader can be installed alongside for viewing-only users.

Step 2

Create or import the document

Open an existing PDF, create one from a Word or Excel file, scan a paper document, or start from a template; OCR converts scans into editable, searchable text before any editing begins.

Step 3

Edit, convert and structure

Edit text and images directly on the page, reorder and crop pages, merge or split documents, and convert to Word or Excel when the recipient needs an editable file rather than a fixed-layout PDF.

Step 4

Secure and redact

Apply password protection and AES-256 encryption, set permission controls on copying and editing, redact sensitive content manually or with AI Smart Redact on PDF Editor+, and add certificate-based digital signatures where identity assurance matters.

Step 5

Build forms and collect data

Create fillable forms with automatic field recognition, add signature and date fields, and distribute them by link or email; responses arrive as completed PDFs ready for filing.

Step 6

Send for signature

In Foxit eSign, upload the document, add signature, date and payment fields, set the signing order, and send; recipients sign from a browser without an account while the audit trail records each event.

Step 7

File, share and archive

Store completed documents in Foxit DMS with version control and check-in and check-out, share review links for collaboration, and export PDF/A for long-term archiving with accessibility tags for compliance.

Capabilities

Key features that actually matter

1

PDF editing and page manipulation

Text and images edit directly on the page with automatic reflow, and pages can be inserted, deleted, reordered, rotated, cropped, merged and split, covering everything from a one-page correction to restructuring a multi-hundred-page document.

Trade-off: Editing complex layouts — multi-column brochures, heavy graphics, embedded fonts — is where any non-Adobe editor shows its limits; test your own document types during the trial rather than trusting the feature list.

2

OCR and scan-to-PDF

Optical character recognition converts scanned documents into editable, searchable PDFs, with language support and PDF/A output for archiving, which is the practical route into digitising paper records, invoices and legacy files.

Trade-off: OCR quality depends on scan quality and language mix; poor scans and handwritten notes produce errors that still need manual correction, so budget review time for large backfile conversions.

3

Redaction and document security

Manual redaction is available on all plans, AI Smart Redact on PDF Editor+ detects and permanently removes sensitive personal data, and password protection with AES-256 encryption, permission controls and certificate signatures protect documents in transit and at rest.

Trade-off: Redaction is permanent and irreversible once applied, so a mistaken redaction destroys content; work on copies and verify the redacted output before distribution, especially with AI-assisted redaction.

4

Forms and data collection

Forms can be created from scratch or recognised automatically from existing documents, with text, checkbox, signature and date fields, JavaScript enhancements for validation, and distribution by link or email with responses filed as completed PDFs.

Trade-off: Form building is capable but not a dedicated form platform; complex conditional logic and multi-step data collection may still need a specialist form or e-signature tool.

5

Conversion and compliance output

Documents convert to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and image formats, with PDF/A and PDF/X compliance for archiving and print, and compression that reduces file size while preserving clarity for email and web distribution.

Trade-off: Conversion fidelity varies with document complexity; formatting can shift in heavily designed files, so proof converted documents before sending them to clients or regulators.

6

Foxit eSign and audit trails

Foxit eSign prepares, sends, signs and tracks agreements with templates, bulk sending, in-person signing, payment collection and a tamper-evident audit trail recording signer metadata, RFC 3161 timestamps, IP addresses and event logs, with SOC 2 Type 2 attestation.

Trade-off: Qualified electronic signatures under eIDAS require a separate paid ZealiD account, and the Essentials plan is capped at 250 envelopes a year, so high-volume or high-assurance signing needs the Business plan.

7

AI Assistant and Smart Redact

The AI Assistant summarises, translates, rewrites and chats about documents with 300 free credits a month on every account, while Smart Redact uses AI to detect and remove sensitive personal data; the 2,000-credit tier and Workspace are a $49.99 per year add-on.

Trade-off: AI features are metered and process document content through the vendor's cloud, so teams handling sensitive client data should decide deliberately whether the assistant is switched on and what the 300-credit monthly allowance covers.

8

Integrations and document movement

Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and Salesforce connectors cover the document-centric stack, with Zapier, developer APIs and an MCP server for everything else, and Foxit DMS providing versioned storage inside the subscription.

Trade-off: No native connection to the accounting and CRM packages a UK small business runs is published, so signed documents still travel to the CRM and accounts by email or manual upload.

Best use cases

When Foxit earns its place

Professional services firms

Consultancies, accountants and legal support teams that edit PDF proposals, contracts and reports daily get Acrobat-class editing at a lower price, with a perpetual licence option for fixed workstations.

Businesses digitising paper records

OCR and scan-to-PDF turn archived files, invoices and paper forms into editable, searchable documents, with PDF/A output for long-term archiving.

Teams sending routine agreements

Foxit eSign handles NDAs, contracts and approvals with templates, bulk sending and a defensible audit trail, at a price undercuts enterprise signing suites.

Organisations with redaction duties

AI Smart Redact and manual redaction remove sensitive personal data before documents are published, shared or filed, with certificate signatures for identity assurance.

Mixed-platform teams

Windows and macOS desktop apps, a web editor on every subscription and mobile apps on PDF Editor+ cover the platforms UK teams actually use, with a free Reader for viewing-only users.

Document-centric developers

PDF Services, Document Generation and Embedding APIs plus Zapier and an MCP server cover bulk generation, custom workflows and embedding PDF viewing in your own application.

Buyer fit

Who should consider Foxit?

UK SMEs that live in PDF

Businesses that create, edit, convert and sign PDF documents daily and want one vendor for editing and signing at a lower total cost than an Adobe-centric stack.

Buyers who want licensing choice

The subscription, the bundle and the perpetual licence cover different appetites for commitment, and the perpetual option is rare among serious PDF editors.

Teams with document security duties

Password protection, AES-256 encryption, permission controls, redaction and certificate signatures cover the controls a security-conscious SME needs without a separate tool.

Organisations standardising on PDF/A

PDF/A and PDF/X compliance plus accessibility tagging support archiving, print and accessibility obligations in one editor.

Businesses with mixed platforms

Windows, macOS, web, iOS and Android coverage with a free Reader for occasional users means the whole team can work on documents without buying every seat an editor licence.

Buyer fit

Who should probably not choose Foxit?

Buyers who need a free editor

The free Foxit PDF Reader views, annotates and fills forms but cannot edit page content; editing, OCR and conversion require a paid plan.

Teams on Linux or Chromebook

There is no Linux desktop editor and no native Chromebook app — only the web editor, the Chrome extension and the free Reader — so those platforms are second-class citizens.

Procurement that requires ISO 27001

No ISO 27001 certification is listed on the trust centre, which will not satisfy a procurement condition that names it explicitly.

Buyers who need UK data residency

eSign data is hosted on AWS in the US, EU (Frankfurt) or Canada, with account information remaining in the US; there is no UK data centre.

Businesses that need unlimited e-signatures cheaply

eSign is a separate purchase from the editor, the Essentials plan is capped at 250 envelopes a year, and qualified signatures need a separate ZealiD account, so high-volume signing costs more than the bundle suggests.

Buyers who want one all-in-one subscription

Editing, e-signing and AI are three separate purchases with different plan gates, so the total cost of a full Foxit stack is higher than any single price suggests.

Alternative approach

Foxit vs doing it another way

Before subscribing to any PDF tool it is worth naming the honest alternatives. All of them can produce and edit PDFs; they differ in how much they cost, which platforms they cover and how they handle signing.

Ordinary alternatives to Foxit, compared on what each route actually involves.
Alternative routeWhat it involves in practice
Adobe AcrobatThe incumbent with the deepest feature set, the strongest brand recognition and the broadest compliance story — at a higher subscription price and with no perpetual licence option for new buyers.
A free reader and manual processesFoxit PDF Reader, macOS Preview and browser viewers handle viewing, annotation and form-filling at no cost, but editing, OCR and conversion require workarounds that do not scale.
A dedicated e-signature serviceSignable, DocuSign and PandaDoc focus on signing workflows rather than editing, and may offer simpler per-envelope pricing for businesses that send agreements but rarely edit PDFs.
A document management systemSharePoint, Google Drive and Dropbox handle storage, versioning and collaboration well, but they do not edit PDF content, so the editing step still needs a tool.
An office suite's export functionWord and Google Docs export to PDF reliably for simple documents, which covers creation but not editing, OCR, redaction or forms.
Doing nothing this quarterDeferring is legitimate while documents are handled adequately by existing tools; switching PDF editors mid-project creates version chaos without solving a live problem.

Rollout

Implementation and adoption

  1. Map the plan gates before buying

PDF Editor, PDF Editor+ and the perpetual licence differ in mobile apps, Smart Redact, DMS, AI credits and e-sign envelopes; map each requirement to a plan before comparing prices, because the branding understates the gaps.

  2. Test your own document types

Open your most complex PDFs — multi-column layouts, scanned files, forms, large graphics — in the 14-day trial and check editing fidelity, OCR accuracy and conversion output before committing.

  3. Decide the editing and signing split

Editing and e-signing are separate products; decide whether the bundle's 150 envelopes a year covers your signing volume or whether a standalone eSign plan is the better route.

  4. Budget the AI usage

AI features are metered at 300 credits a month free, with the 2,000-credit tier and Workspace at $49.99 per year; estimate your monthly usage before deciding whether the add-on pays for itself.

  5. Check platform coverage honestly

There is no Linux desktop editor and no native Chromebook app; if your team includes those platforms, confirm the web editor covers their workflows before buying.

  6. Plan the eSign data residency question

eSign data is hosted in the US, EU (Frankfurt) or Canada; confirm with Foxit which region applies to your account and whether that satisfies your clients and insurers before sending sensitive agreements.

  7. Read the commercial terms

Subscriptions renew automatically, the 14-day trial needs no credit card, volume discounts start at 30 licences, and education discounts are available; understand renewal and cancellation before annual billing.

  8. Integrate storage from day one

Connect SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive or Box during setup so documents land in the right place immediately, rather than accumulating in downloads and email attachments.

UK context

UK small-business considerations

  • Who you are contracting with. Foxit Software is headquartered in Fremont, California, with a European entity, Foxit Europe GmbH, in Berlin and a UK sales line; there is no UK-registered operating entity, and the terms are governed by the vendor's standard commercial terms.
  • Currency and tax. All pricing is published in US dollars with no UK price list, so the sterling amount you pay moves with the exchange rate and your card provider's charges; confirm the VAT treatment that applies to your purchase with Foxit and your accountant.
  • Where the data sits. Foxit eSign uses AWS data centres in the US (N. Virginia, Ohio, Northern California), Europe (Frankfurt) and Canada (Montreal), with UK and EEA customer data stored on EU servers and account information remaining in the US; there is no UK data centre.
  • Security assurance. Published controls include SOC 2 Type 2 attestation, AES-256 encryption, OAuth 2.0, Microsoft Entra ID SSO, GDPR support and eIDAS compliance; no ISO 27001 certification is listed on the trust centre, which matters if your clients or insurers ask for it.
  • Support in UK hours. Foxit publishes EMEA support contact details and a UK sales line, but no UK-specific support hours or service-level targets are published; test responsiveness during the trial rather than assuming UK-hours coverage.
  • E-signature legal framework. UK electronic signatures are recognised under the Electronic Communications Act 2000 and the UK eIDAS framework retained after Brexit; Foxit eSign's audit trail, timestamping and certificate signatures support evidential weight, but qualified signatures require the ZealiD integration on the Business plan.
  • Integration fit for a UK stack. Microsoft 365, SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and Salesforce connectors cover the document-centric stack, but no native connection to Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or the UK CRM market is published, so signed documents reach those systems by email or manual upload.
  • Accessibility and archiving duties. PDF/UA compliance, Section 508, VPAT and ADA documentation plus PDF/A output support UK public-sector and accessibility obligations, which is a genuine advantage for businesses with statutory archiving or accessibility requirements.

Buying guidance

Pricing and value considerations

Foxit PDF Editor is $129.99 per user per year or $10.99 per user per month billed monthly, PDF Editor+ is $159.99 per user per year, and the PDF Editor 14 perpetual licence is $209.99 one-time. Foxit eSign is priced separately at $120 per user per year for Essentials and $300 per user per year for Business, with an AI add-on at $49.99 per year and volume discounts up to 30 percent for 30 or more licences.

All prices are published in US dollars with taxes excluded, so the sterling cost moves with the exchange rate and card charges. The 14-day free trial needs no credit card, and the free Reader covers viewing, annotation and form-filling indefinitely, which makes the real entry point lower than the editing price suggests.

1

What drives value

  • A perpetual licence option at $209.99 that Adobe does not offer in the same way, for buyers who want to own the software rather than rent it
  • A subscription price below the comparable Adobe Acrobat plan, with the full editing, OCR, forms and security feature set included
  • A free Reader on every major platform and 300 free AI credits a month, so occasional users cost nothing
  • Foxit eSign at $120 per user per year undercuts enterprise signing suites for routine agreement volumes
  • Foxit DMS with unlimited cloud storage included free with every PDF Editor subscription, removing a separate storage purchase
  • Volume discounts up to 30 percent for 30 or more licences, which materially reduces cost at team scale
2

What drives cost

  • US dollar billing with taxes exclusive, so exchange rates and card charges sit on top of the published price
  • The gap between PDF Editor and PDF Editor+ — mobile apps, Smart Redact, DMS and 150 e-sign envelopes — pushes buyers who need those features to the higher tier
  • AI features metered at 300 credits a month free, with the 2,000-credit tier and Workspace at $49.99 per year
  • eSign as a separate purchase from the editor, with Essentials capped at 250 envelopes a year and Business required for unlimited envelopes, SSO and qualified signatures
  • Qualified electronic signatures requiring a separate paid ZealiD account on top of the eSign Business plan
  • No native Linux editor or Chromebook app, so teams on those platforms may need the web editor or a different tool entirely
3

Check before you buy

  • Current prices in US dollars, the currency you will actually be charged in, and the VAT treatment that applies to your purchase
  • Which plan carries each feature you need — mobile apps, Smart Redact, DMS, AI credits and e-sign envelopes are gated across PDF Editor, PDF Editor+ and the perpetual licence
  • Your expected AI usage against the 300-credit monthly allowance and the $49.99 per year add-on price
  • Your signing volume against the eSign Essentials 250-envelope cap and the Business plan's unlimited envelopes
  • Whether your platform mix — especially Linux and Chromebook — is covered by the desktop apps or only the web editor
  • Where your eSign data will be hosted and whether US, EU or Canadian residency satisfies your clients and insurers

Trade-offs

Important limitations of Foxit

  • The free Reader is not an editor. Foxit PDF Reader views, annotates and fills forms but cannot edit page content, so every editing, OCR, redaction and conversion task requires a paid plan.
  • No Linux desktop editor and no native Chromebook app. Linux is supported only through the PDF SDK for developers and the free Reader, and Chromebook users get a Chrome extension and the web editor rather than a native app.
  • US dollar pricing with no UK price list. All prices are published in US dollars, so the sterling cost moves with the exchange rate and card charges, and taxes are excluded from the quoted figures.
  • No ISO 27001 certification listed. The trust centre publishes SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR, eIDAS, HIPAA and other attestations but no ISO 27001 certification, which will not satisfy a procurement condition that names it.
  • eSign data residency is not UK. eSign data is hosted on AWS in the US, EU (Frankfurt) or Canada, with account information remaining in the US; there is no UK data centre for UK customers.
  • AI features are metered. The AI Assistant and Smart Redact run on 300 free credits a month, with the 2,000-credit tier and Workspace sold as a $49.99 per year add-on, so heavy AI use costs more than the headline price.
  • Editing and signing are separate purchases. PDF Editor and Foxit eSign are different products with different plan gates, so the total cost of a full Foxit stack — editor, e-signing and AI — is higher than any single price suggests.

Decision framework

Deciding on Foxit

Consider Foxit if

  • You work heavily in PDF and want Acrobat-class editing, OCR, forms and security at a lower price than Adobe
  • You want the option of a perpetual licence rather than an ever-renewing subscription
  • You send a steady flow of routine agreements and want e-signatures with a defensible audit trail from the same vendor
  • Your team runs Windows, macOS, web, iOS or Android and you want one editor plus a free Reader for occasional users
  • You need PDF/A archiving, accessibility tagging or redaction capabilities for compliance or public-sector work
  • You can accept US dollar pricing and non-UK data hosting for a cloud e-signature service

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a free editor rather than a free viewer — the Reader cannot edit page content
  • Your team includes Linux or Chromebook users who need a native desktop app
  • Procurement requires ISO 27001 certification as a condition of purchase
  • You need UK data residency for signed documents or a UK supplier entity
  • You send high-volume or high-assurance signatures and need unlimited envelopes or qualified signatures without a separate ZealiD account
  • You want one all-in-one subscription rather than separate editing, signing and AI purchases

Pros

  • A genuine alternative to Adobe Acrobat: full PDF editing, OCR, redaction, forms, security and conversion at a lower subscription price, with a perpetual licence option that Adobe does not offer in the same way
  • Foxit eSign is a standalone, credible e-signature service with SOC 2 Type 2 attestation, eIDAS support, qualified signatures via ZealiD on the Business plan and tamper-evident audit trails with RFC 3161 timestamps
  • Cross-platform coverage for the platforms UK businesses actually use: Windows, macOS, web, iOS and Android, with the web editor included in every subscription
  • Strong integration catalogue for document-centric work: Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and Salesforce connectors
  • Documented security controls including AES-256 encryption, password protection, certificate-based digital signatures, OAuth 2.0 and Microsoft Entra ID single sign-on
  • A free PDF Reader on every major platform and 300 free AI credits a month on all accounts, so occasional users can do real work without paying

Cons

  • All pricing is published in US dollars with no UK price list, so the sterling cost moves with the exchange rate and card charges
  • The desktop editor is not available for Linux and there is no native Chromebook app — only a Chrome browser extension and the web editor
  • The free Foxit PDF Reader views, annotates and fills forms but cannot edit page content, so editing requires a paid plan
  • AI features are metered: 300 credits a month free, with the 2,000-credit tier and Workspace sold as a $49.99 per year add-on
  • No ISO 27001 certification is listed on the trust centre, and data residency for eSign is the US, EU (Frankfurt) or Canada rather than the UK
  • Foxit eSign's qualified signature support requires a separate paid ZealiD account, and the Essentials plan is capped at 250 envelopes a year

Final verdict

Where Foxit makes sense

Foxit makes a coherent argument to a specific UK buyer: a small business that works heavily in PDF and wants credible editing, OCR, redaction, forms and conversion at a lower price than Adobe, with the rare option of a perpetual licence and a separate, well-attested e-signature service for routine agreements. The editing feature set is genuinely complete for ordinary business use, the security story is documented rather than asserted, and Foxit eSign's SOC 2 attestation, eIDAS support and audit trails make it a credible mid-market signing service.

The reservations are the ones that matter at contract time. Pricing is in US dollars with no UK price list, there is no Linux desktop editor and no native Chromebook app, the free Reader cannot edit page content, AI features are metered with a paid tier, and eSign data residency is the US, EU or Canada rather than the UK. Editing, signing and AI are three separate purchases with different plan gates, so the total cost of a full Foxit stack is higher than any single price suggests, and no ISO 27001 certification is listed.

Before committing, verify four things directly with Foxit: the current prices in US dollars and the VAT treatment that applies to your purchase; which plan carries each feature you need, from mobile apps and Smart Redact to e-sign envelopes and AI credits; where your eSign data will be hosted and whether that satisfies your clients and insurers; and the live status of the integrations your workflow depends on. If those check out, Foxit is a proportionate, well-evidenced way for a UK SME to cover PDF editing and e-signing without paying Adobe prices.

FAQ

Common questions

What is Foxit used for?

Foxit is used to create, edit, convert, secure, annotate and sign PDF documents. Foxit PDF Editor handles editing text and images, OCR on scanned documents, redaction, form creation, password protection and conversion to Word and Excel on Windows, macOS, the web and mobile. Foxit eSign is a separate cloud service for sending documents for electronic signature with templates, bulk sending and a tamper-evident audit trail.

How much does Foxit cost?

Foxit PDF Editor is $129.99 per user per year or $10.99 per user per month billed monthly, PDF Editor+ is $159.99 per user per year, and the PDF Editor 14 perpetual licence is $209.99 one-time. Foxit eSign is priced separately at $120 per user per year for Essentials and $300 per user per year for Business, with an AI add-on at $49.99 per year and volume discounts up to 30 percent for 30 or more licences. All prices are in US dollars, so confirm current pricing and tax treatment with Foxit.

Is Foxit PDF Editor free?

No. The free Foxit PDF Reader views, annotates and fills forms but cannot edit page content. Editing, OCR, redaction, conversion and form creation require a paid PDF Editor plan, a PDF Editor+ plan or the perpetual licence. Every account, including the free Reader, receives 300 AI credits a month.

Does Foxit work on Linux or Chromebook?

There is no Linux desktop editor — Linux is supported through the PDF SDK for developers and the free Reader — and no native Chromebook app. Chromebook users can use the web editor included in a subscription and the free Chrome browser extension. Windows, macOS, web, iOS and Android are the supported platforms for the full editor.

Is Foxit eSign legally binding in the UK?

UK electronic signatures are recognised under the Electronic Communications Act 2000 and the UK eIDAS framework. Foxit eSign supports typed and certificate-based digital signatures with an audit trail recording timestamps, IP addresses and signer events, and qualified electronic signatures under eIDAS via a ZealiD integration on the Business plan. Confirm the signature level your contracts require with Foxit and your legal adviser.

How does Foxit compare to Adobe Acrobat?

Foxit PDF Editor covers the core editing, OCR, forms, security and conversion features most businesses use at a lower subscription price than Adobe Acrobat Pro, and offers a perpetual licence option that Adobe does not. Acrobat has the deeper feature set, the stronger brand and broader compliance story. Test your own document types in Foxit's 14-day trial before deciding.

Where is Foxit eSign data stored?

Foxit eSign uses AWS data centres in the United States (N. Virginia, Ohio, Northern California), Europe (Frankfurt) and Canada (Montreal). UK and EEA customer data is stored on EU servers, while account information remains in the US. There is no UK data centre, so confirm the hosting region that applies to your account with Foxit.

Does Foxit integrate with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace?

Yes. Foxit publishes integrations with Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox and Box, plus a dedicated Foxit for Salesforce product, Zapier and developer APIs. No native connection to the accounting packages is published, so signed documents reach those systems by email or manual upload.
